ScubaVirtual is a capstone project for the University of Alabama created by Nick Miller. The idea behind this project is to leverage technology that is not currently used in scuba training, and allow users to virtually ‘Learn’ and ‘Explore’ scuba diving through 360 and VR videos. Using a smart phone, personal computer, or even a VR headset, users can become fully immersed in diving with content created on YouTube and original content created by Nick.
Nick Miller is a Product / User Experience Designer in Nashville, TN working in the healthcare space. He helps build and design apps/websites so patients and consumers can receive better and more efficient care.
Nick graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2008 with a Journalism/Visual Communications degree. He is a 2nd year grad student currently pursuing a MS in Human Environmental Science with a focus on Interactive Technology.
Nick is originally from Oklahoma, but has lived in Nashville most of his life. He recently married his high school sweetheart and they live together with their exotic shorthair cat.
In his spare time, he teaches scuba classes on the weekends. As a PADI divemaster, he loves traveling and diving and hopes to get his instructor card in the next several years.
This project was inspired by the Netflix documentary ‘Chasing Coral.’ If we can capture our oceans in high-resolution 360 photographs, why can’t we do the same with teaching scuba? This documentary was created at a time when 360 action cameras weren’t available to average consumers. With the advances in technology and small portable cameras, the average consumer can capture 360 VR content for only a few hundred dollars.
